FK12: Roland CompuRhythm CR-8000
Roland CompuRhythm CR-8000
The Roland CompuRhythm CR-8000 was released in 1980 along with its smaller brother, the CR-5000. The sound generation is all analogue (or analog if you prefer) and features metallic sounding cymbals reminiscent of the Korg KR-55/KR-55B models. Hand-clap was introduced for the first time as well as tom-toms that are used in the intro/fill-in patterns.
- High Tom
- Low Tom
- Open High-Hat
- High Conga
- Mid Conga
- Low Conga
The 24 preset rhythms are similar in nature to that of the CR-78, though not identical. To add variety, Roland provided eight arranger buttons that either add to or change existing rhythms. For example, you can add hand-clap or percussion, or replace the hi-hat or cymbal patterns.
Along with the 24 preset rhythms and arranger patterns, there are eight programmable memory locations for creating and storing your own rhythms. These can be mixed freely with each other as well as with the preset rhythms.
- Swing 1
- Swing 2
- Slow Rock
- Fox Trot
- Samba 1
- Samba 2
- 7 Arranger patterns
- 8 programmable patterns
- Shuffle control
- Fill-In 1–12
Now, the CR-78 had fill-in patterns but the CR-8000 has gone a stage further and provided four programmable intro/fill-in patterns along with the eight presets. Also, the crash feature provides a cymbal hit on the first beat following an intro/fill-in, as a drummer often does. We musn’t forget to mention the accent control. This emphasises certain beats which, again, a real drummer would often do.
The already mentioned CR-5000 was similar looking but had no programmable rhythms, less instrument voices and no LED display.
CR-8000’s usually fetch a good price on eBay, and, as usual, I found myself paying a wee bit more than I had hoped for mine. However, after a good clean-up both cosmetically and mechanically (I.E. switch and pot contact cleaning) it is in full working order.
The Kontakt Instrument
Details of the Kontakt Instrument and how to purchase it are here. Essentially it is a re-creation of the real thing so most of the description above is relevant. However, please contact me if you have any questions.
